About the design

Anyone else ready to revamp their living room? Combining a colour pop that’ll shake things up with all the eco-friendly vibes, Juliet’s crochet upcycled lampshade project is so simple even beginners’ll love it.

All you need is some paper raffia yarn, a few pom poms, and an old lampshade. Take the fabric off the frame and gently scrape away any glue, being careful not to take the white coating with it, et voilà – one budget-friendly base, ready for a new lease of life.

This pattern is designed by Juliet Laura Gunn and was first published in Mollie Makes magazine issue 125

This pattern is written in UK terminology.

Pattern details

You will need:
● Wool and the Gang Ra-Ra Raffia, 100% paper, 100g/25m per cake, one cake each in:
Yarn A - Hot Pink
Yarn B - Vit C
Yarn C - Coal Black
● 4mm (UK 8, US G/6) crochet hook
● Lampshade frame
● 18 pom poms, 3cm (1¼") diameter
● Yarn needle
● Sewing needle
● Black sewing thread

The lampshade frame we used had six panels that are narrow at the top and widen at the bottom.

We made three granny squares per panel – two small and one large – and each one is slightly smaller than the section of the frame they sit in, so once sewn on, they’ll be held in place tightly.

If your lampshade is a different size or shape, crochet more or fewer rounds on the square closest to the size you need, and adjust the quantities accordingly.

Once made, the granny squares are sewn together, then sewn to the frame of the lampshade. Pom poms are sewn to the bottom to finish.

TENSION
Small granny square:
Approx. 8cm (31 / 8") square
Large granny square:
Approx. 10cm (4") square

Finished size:
Approx. 29.5cm (11 5/8 ") high. Diameter approx. 18cm (7 1/8") at the top and 36cm (14 1/8") at the bottom
